A project where the main focus was to create a transitions from one scene to the next. This assignment was part of Ben Marriott's Master Motion Design course! I decided to make a transition of different dimensions by going from 2D to a 3D character and environment.

The assignment was to recreate his animation but with your own twist. I decided to go above and beyond by making a my own animation but still delivering on what needed to be accomplished. I challenged myself by giving myself a deadline of 1 week.

Before starting any animation or design, I refine a single scene to serve as a styleguide for the rest of the design and animations. It is done in black and white first to highlight the hierarchy of elements before giving it color. After deciding on a color scheme, I move onto texturing as the last step.

In order to accomplish the texture animation, I used a halftone brush on 4 different layers while clipping it to their respective objects in Photoshop before bringing it into After Effects. While inside After Effects, I imported the texture into a precomp and made it into a looping texture. Then the animation of the face, arm, and button was done last.

The last frame of the 2D animation was used as a reference for the 3D modeling process. I used an app called fspy to get the camera and perspective set up correctly. From there, all it took was to model the objects as close as I can to the reference based on the cameras position.

I used the add on called Clay-Doh to apply the play doh look onto the character and environment. The texture gave it a more childish and friendly aesthetic that matches the cartoon design in the 2D version.

The first step in animation is to create the rigs for the objects that are moving. For the eyebrows and mouth pieces, I decided to go with a lattice modifier and shape keys as the best way to animate them. The arm is a series of bendy bones connected to each other. Next step is to go from one shape key to the next and move the position of the pupil while keeping the pupil always facing the camera using a "Track To" constraint. In the graph editor, I was able to ease and overshoot some of the objects as if I was in After Effect's value graph. The bendy rig allowed for the best deformation and was set up in a way similar to an IK rig. Lastly, I added a noise modifier to the camera right when the hand slams down on the button to create a shake effect.

Wrapping up this project consisted of color grading the openEXR blender files and adding sound effects to the animation. The last step was to finally post it to the discussion board to complete the assignment.

To accomplish the requirements of a successful animation for the course, I had to make transition from one state to the next. I also needed to make the design be looping. My solution to this problem was a simple cut from 2D to 3D that occurs at the same time of a button press. To make it looping, I created another cut from 3D to 2D using the button again but make it bit crushed and seem like there was an error.
